CARLISLE, PA – At their public meeting today, the Cumberland County Commissioners proclaimed April 8-14, 2012 to be National Library Week in recognition of the role that Cumberland County’s libraries play in fueling educational and economic opportunity for all its citizens. Over the last ten years, the Cumberland County Library System has seen the number of items borrowed grow from 1.9 million to 2.6 million annually – a 39% increase.

April 2, 2012 - Library System Accepts Online Payments (PDF, 51kb, 1 page)
(Carlisle, PA) – Jonelle Darr, Executive Director of the Cumberland County Library System, announced today that the Cumberland County Library System accepts online credit and debit card payments via Visa, MasterCard or Discover cards for outstanding fines for overdue materials, or charges for lost or damaged materials.

February 12, 2010 - Library System Announces Final Wave of Cuts (PDF, 23KB, 4 pages)
Due to 2010 state budget cuts totaling more than $850,000, Jonelle Darr, executive director of the Cumberland County Library System, announced today that Shippensburg Public Library will reduce its operating hours by 5%. Also, since state funding for 20 POWER Library databases ended on January 31, 2010, the library system is forced to remove these services from its web site.

Due to 2010 state budget cuts, the Cumberland County Library System will reduce operating hours at an additional library, East Pennsboro Branch in Enola, PA; and will significantly reduce funding for library collections at Cleve J. Fredricksen Library in Camp Hill, PA and Joseph T. Simpson Public Library in Mechanicsburg, PA.

December 18, 2009 - Library System Announces 2nd Wave of Cuts (PDF, 19KB, 3 pages)
Due to state budget cuts, the Cumberland County Library System will reduce operating hours at an additional library, Amelia Givin Library in Mt. Holly Springs; and will reduce funding for library collections and programs at Amelia Givin, Bosler Memorial Library in Carlisle and New Cumberland Library.
In addition, fine rates for materials will increase from $.25 per day to $.30 per day effective January 4, 2010. Fine rates for video recordings (including DVD’s) will remain at $2 per day.

September 2009 - The Old World Folk Band, based in Harrisburg, PA will present special regional programs in seven counties in celebration of this year’s One Book, One Community book, People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks. A Cumberland County performance is scheduled for Thursday, October 15 at 7:00 pm at Grace United Methodist Church on Pomfret Street in Carlisle. April 9, 2009 (Corrected May 18, 2009) - On Monday, April 13, 2009 the American Library Association releases its annual State of America’s Libraries Report to celebrate National Library Week (April 12-18). Locally, 1st quarter library numbers are available in Cumberland County, and they indicate a dramatic increase in use.

May 1, 2008 - The Cumberland County Library System announced today that self-check stations are now available at its three largest and busiest libraries, Cleve J. Fredricksen Library in Camp Hill, Bosler
Memorial Library in Carlisle and Joseph T. Simpson Public Library in Mechanicsburg, for library card members’ convenience.

April 1, 2008 - Cumberland County, Pa. was honored April 10 when it received an Acts of Caring Award from the National Association of Counties (NACo) for its Service to Adult Readers (STAR) Program during a ceremony on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. The awards, presented annually by NACo, recognize the top county volunteer programs in the country.
