May 2011

Order Monday, May 16
through Thursday, June 30
July is National Blueberry Month! We’re gearing up for a great summer with a blueberry-themed fundraiser. During May and June, the Fredricksen Library will be pre-selling 10 lb. boxes of fresh blueberries from New Jersey. It will be a fun and delicious way to kick off the summer, AND it will help the Library raise some extra funds! We’ll also highlight some of our favorite blueberry books in the Children’s Department, such as Blueberries for Sal, and pull together some of our favorite blueberry recipes for you to enjoy. You can pre-order your blueberries starting May 16th at the reference desk. Cost will be $30 per 10-lb. box – not only will the purchases be sales-tax exempt, but patrons will also get credit for a $10 tax-deductible donation. Where else can you buy fresh blueberries at wholesale prices AND help the Library at the same time? Pick-up for the blueberries will be at the Library between July 5-8.

Social Media for Readers
Alana Bubnis
One day, as I leafed through piles of clippings from magazines, Bookpages, the New York Times Book Review in what ended up as a futile attempt to locate the review of a book that I wanted to recommend to the friend I was talking to, but couldn't remember the title of, she looked at me quizzically and said, "Why aren't you on Goodreads?" With that question, I gained entry into the world of social media dedicated to reading.  At first glance, Goodreads can be overwhelming. Founded in 2006, it now boasts 4.7 million members (and counting), over 150 million book titles, and features including giveaways for advance copies, an author program, trivia, reading challenges and endless groups.  READ MORE

Health Grant at Fredricksen
In Fall 2009, we applied for the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant to provide adult patrons with consumer health materials. In March 2010, we were awarded $10,000 for Fredricksen Library and $5,000 for East Pennsboro Branch Library. Our new materials began to arrive in September 2010. We would like to survey our patrons about the new and updated collection of health materials. The survey contains only 6 questions and will take only a few minutes to complete. Thank you for taking the time to give us feedback on our selection of materials!

United Way Volunteer of the Year Reception
The United Way of the Capital Region hosted a Volunteer of the Year Reception on Thursday, April 28th. The evening showcased volunteers who have given to their community through countless hours of volunteer service. The East Pennsboro Branch Library nominated Sue Folk. Since 1997, Sue has volunteered her time to help the library with everything from assisting with book sales to shelving materials. The Fredricksen Library nominated The Reverend Canon and Mrs. Hoyt. They have spent countless hours weeding, digging (and perspiring!) while making the library property a beautiful attraction in the community. Thanks to our volunteers for all they give to the library.  Read more about our volunteers     See PHOTOS of our volunteers.
