Bee Local @ Fredricksen:
A Honey & Local Foods Festival!

Bee Local @ Fredricksen is the Library’s first annual honey and local foods festival. Planned for September 17, from 1-5PM, the Library hopes to raise awareness of the importance of bees to our community and environment, the benefits of beekeeping and backyard gardening, and the critical role both play in our local agriculture and food industries. The Festival will be an amazing day full of fun, with opportunities for all family members to shop, learn, explore and more! Click the links below for more details!

Experience the regional premiere of Queen of the Sun: What are the Bees Telling Us? on Friday, September 16 at 7PM. See the movie trailer HERE

Support Fredricksen Library & Local Foods!
Get ready for Bee Local @ Fredricksen Library, our first annual Honey & Local Foods Festival on September 17, 2011, by sporting a custom-designed tshirt! To celebrate the event, the Library has designed bee-utiful Bee Local tshirts. Proceeds from the sale of the tshirts will go to support the Festival, which promotes honey & local foods producers in our community. Tshirts are 100% white cotton featuring our Bee Local sunflower logo. Available in various sizes, limited quantities for $12.00 each at the Reference desk.

Green Energy Initiatives @ Fredricksen
Bonnie Goble, Director
A festival to celebrate all things green and local would not be complete without a celebration of the successful end of our green energy grants here at Fredricksen.

Over the course of the past two years, the library has been the grateful recipient of over $300,000 in Federal stimulus funds. With that money, which funded a solar installation (Envinity, Inc.), new equipment (Spangler & Boyer), new controls (Conexus) and cutting edge engineering (Paragon). In addition to the stimulus funds, the library was able to “match” for the grants with a generous contribution from Beatrice Kelley, who remembered the library in her will. Miss Kelley’s contribution has enabled the library to reduce its energy costs by 30%. By so doing, she ensured that library operations, not utility bills, will be the focus for the next twenty years.

Stop into the mechanical room (lower level) to view our shiny new heat wheel, gleaming duct work and cutting edge solar. At Bee Local, we’ll be running tours of the new equipment. We’ve learned a lot, and it’s all helped to carry the library forward. Come and see!

Christine Myers Crist
Christine Myers Crist, a former Trustee to the Cleve J. Fredricksen library, passed away August 16, 2011. Mrs. Crist lived directly across the street from the library. She always said that she loved to see the library “front and center” as she came out of her front door. Mrs. Crist served for many years as a trustee on the board for the Fredricksen Library. Her frank and intelligent assessment of library issues was invaluable. She will be sorely missed.

September Exhibits at Fredricksen Library
Susquehanna Valley Plein Air Painters
The sun moves, shadows change; there is only a short period of time that an artist has to capture the shifts of light and color when painting outdoors - but it is this very desire to distill the energy and freshness of nature that drives the plein air painter. Susquehanna Valley Plein Air Painters was formed to bring together artists who share this passion. For the month of September, the lower level community gallery will display the paintings by the Susquehanna Valley Plein Air Painters, a group of twenty-five prominent, local artists. Visit the SVPAP blog
World Coins
This display of World Coins will show the development of European coins including today’s Euro. There will be a section of Chinese and Japanese coins from 500 BCE to modern coins. The Odd and Curious section includes bar, ring and tea money. The elements that that are used to produce coins will be featured in native and refined form, with special emphasis on copper, the most prevalent element in US coins. David and Billee will be at the display to answer questions and show patrons items of interest, from 3 pm to 5 pm on two Sundays: the 11th and 25th. They will have a World Coin for each child who visits the display those days.
