2012 Birdie for Books Mini Golf @ Fredricksen
birdie3rd Annual “Birdie for Books” at the Fredricksen Library – What a Great Success!
In Memory of Heath L. Allen
Saturday, February 25, 2012

Thanks to the help of our sponsors, volunteers, participants, and staff, the 3rd Annual “Birdie for Books” event held Saturday, February 25, 2012 was another tremendous success!

The 18-hole mini-golf fundraiser was held in memory of the late Heath L. Allen, an avid golfer and supporter of the Fredricksen Library. We had a “course record” 450 golfers of all ages play the challenging course throughout the day. After the golfers were finished, the 19th Hole Café, sponsored by Cleveland Brothers, provided refreshments and snacks for everyone involved.

“Birdie for Books” is such a wonderful event, in part because of all the fun that the kids have. One participant told the Library that we had to have this event the same weekend next year, “because this is the best birthday party I could have.” Another young golfer requested if he could take one of the golf balls home with him. When asked why, he said, “So that I can remember the best day of my life!”

Fredricksen raised more than $11,500 from this year’s “Birdie for Books” fundraiser. This fun fundraiser is yet another way in which our community has rallied together over the past few years to increase income streams while state funding has remained flat.

As one can imagine, successful events like “Birdie for Books” cannot happen without the support of the whole community. More than 60 volunteers donated more than 200 hours of community service during the event, including setting up the course, manning the stations during the event, and making sure the Library looked great after a busy event! The Cleveland Bros. 19th Hole Cafe, setup and staffed by volunteers, was stocked with homemade specialties and baked goods, largely donated by staff and volunteers.

rafflesFredricksen also received generous raffle donations from local municipalities and businesses. Hampden Township and the Boroughs of Camp Hill and Lemoyne all donated pool passes for the upcoming summer season. Armitage, Rich Valley, and Spring Creek golf courses all donated greens fees, and this year we even had a Barnes and Noble Nook eReader as a grand prize!  In addition, many raffle prizes were donated by Fredricksen staff and volunteers.

Thanks to all those who came out to support the Library! We hope to see you all next year on Saturday, February 23rd, 2013 for next year’s event!
