Italian for Beginners I - Summer 2023

italianThursdays, August 3 – October 5
7:30 pm - 8:30 pm ONLINE via Zoom

If you have always wanted to learn the Italian language and to share this passion with people who live in your area, this is a great time to do it in the comfort and safety of your home and in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. Italian for Beginners classes have successfully been offered in person at Fredricksen for more than 2 years by native and experienced instructor Anna Maria Bertini Jones. Since 2020, the pandemic has prompted the opportunity to explore online instruction options. The result is an even more effective and enjoyable learning experience, without commuting at night and easy to attend also when you are out of town. You will be learning the basics of the Italian language through live interactive classes and group work. A variety of online multimedia resources will be used to develop basic vocabulary, conversation skills and to introduce some cultural topics like cuisine, art, lifestyle, etc.

Classes are very easy to access. You will receive a Zoom link invitation through which you will be automatically directed to your classroom. During class time students will be learning in a fun and collaborative atmosphere, with the instructor’s help and direction. No specific technological skills are required. All you need is a computer/ laptop/tablet and a printer. Ages 16 and older. Cost: $120 for 10 classes. Students will be advised to also purchase a book online. Register online, by phone, or in person at the library.

June Book Club (West with Giraffes)

June Book Discussion "West with Giraffes"

Come discuss June's book, "West with Giraffes", on June 8th at the library's monthly book discussion!

The book club will be held here at the Coy Public Library, Thursday, June 8th from 5:00pm-6:30pm.

This month's book is "West with Giraffes", written by Lynda Rutledge. You can request this item through our digital catalog, or by calling the library at 717-532-4508.

"'Few true friends have I known and two were giraffes...' Woodrow Wilson Nickel, age 105, feels his life ebbing away. But when he learns giraffes are going extinct, he finds himself recalling the unforgettable experience he cannot take to his grave. It's 1938. The Great Depression lingers. Hitler is threatening Europe, and world-weary Americans long for wonder. They find it in two giraffes who miraculously survive a hurricane while crossing the Atlantic. What follows is a twelve-day road trip in a custom truck to deliver Southern California's first giraffes to the San Diego Zoo. Inspired by true events, the tale weaves real-life figures with fictional ones, including the world's first female zoo director, a crusty old man with a past, a young female photographer with a secret, and assorted reprobates as spotty as the giraffes. Part adventure, part historical saga, and part coming-of-age love story, West with Giraffes explores what it means to be changed by the grace of animals, the kindness of strangers, the passing of time, and a story told before it's too late"--Publisher.
