The Great Backyard Bird Count
For Ages 7-12
Monday, February 8, 4:00-4:30 p.m. on ZOOM
Become a Citizen Scientist with the Great Backyard Bird Count!
Register to join us on ZOOM for a guided walk through of how to participate in the count and an overview of common backyard birds you may see. Then stop in the Library to pick up your Grab & Go STEAM kit with supplies to make a simple birdseed feeder to use during the Count.

During the Great Backyard Bird Count (February 12 to 15), everyone is invited to spend time in their favorite places watching and counting as many birds as they can find and reporting them. Sponsored by the National Audubon Society and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, these recorded observations help scientists better understand global bird populations before one of their annual migrations. This event is part of the 2021 Longwood Gardens Community Reads program, celebrating backyard birds through the titles Ruby's Birds and The Home Place. Like Ruby, we’ll discover the birds in our own neighborhoods that enliven our world and get excited about nature! Please register to receive a ZOOM link and reserve a kit. Space is limited.

For ages 2-5 with an adult caregiver

Join us as we take storytime online for a special winter snow theme! Featuring stories, rhymes, music, and more, storytime teaches social skills, listening comprehension, letter and number recognition, and vocabulary.

Join us on ZOOM for a live 20-25 minute storytime experience. We’ll have fun while building a foundation for reading success. Registration is required and limited. Registrants will be emailed a Zoom link, password, and further instructions before the session.

Children ages 3-7 can stop in the children’s room during the week of January 25th and pick up a simple & fun winter snowy craft to complete at home!

For ages 3-7
While supplies last, no registration necessary

Children ages 3-7 can stop in the children’s room the week of January 11th and pick up a kit with crafts and activities all about Arctic Animals!

Each kit will include the materials and instructions you need for several crafts and activities related to the theme, as well as items chosen specifically to help children develop age appropriate literacy skills such as letter sounds, number recognition, fine motor skills, and more.
