When America Hits the Road: The Early Years of Our Automotive Culture

CARA hundred years ago, an exciting new technology was transforming America: the automobile. This program, led by historian John Maietta, will feature the history of that colorful era, when the first “horseless carriages” were giving way to sporty roadsters, classy limousines, and the ubiquitous Model T Ford. As you’ll learn, the story of our country’s early car culture was driven by unprecedented prospects for freedom and mobility – along with the mixed blessings of high-speed roads, expanding suburbs, installment loans, and parking meters. Weather permitting, you’ll have an opportunity to see a beautifully restored 1931 Model A Ford – and even honk the horn – Ah-OOH-ga! Register online beginning August 1.

The Art & Science of Beekeeping

bee7 pm in the Community Room, Lower Level
Did you know the honeybee can count to four and has a concept of zero? The learning center within the brain of these fascinating creatures surpasses other insects. The honeybee is a social insect that helps to pollinate 1/3 of our food resources. The importance of maintaining the health of honeybees is critical to our own food supply and sustainability. Beekeeping is one way we can help our pollinator friends remain healthy and flourish. But, maintaining bees is not for the faint of heart. There are many different ways we can aid honeybee health: planting native pollinator plants, delay in mowing, and alternate usage to pesticides. Beekeeping is not for everyone. However, if you are curious to learn what it takes to become a successful beekeeper, join us as we unveil some of the mysteries of the honeybee that make this creature so unique. We will review the benefits of beekeeping and the requirements needed for beekeeping (equipment, time, money, space, legalities, and physical strength).
