Great Decisions is America's largest discussion program on world affairs. The program model involves reading the Great Decisions Briefing Book, watching the DVD and meeting expert speakers in a Discussion Group to discuss the most critical global issues facing America today. Each year, eight topics are chosen by Foreign Policy Association's panel of experts.

February 3 - Climate Change and the Global Order: Climate change has become one of the defining issues of our time. As much of the world bands together to come up with a plan, the U.S. remains the notable holdout. What is the rest of the world doing to combat climate change? What impact will the effects of climate change have on global geopolitics?

In partnership with the World Affairs Council of Harrisburg, this year's discussions will meet every other Monday afternoon at 1:00 pm (2/3, 2/17, 3/2, 3/16, 3/30, 4/13, 4/27, 5/11) Register here beginning December 1.

In this day and age of information (& misinformation) overload, we bring you directly to the source to learn more about your Muslim neighbors and their beliefs. During this series, you will view a film about one aspect of Islam and will then have the opportunity to ask questions to a panel.

Inside Islam explores the expertly gathered opinions of Muslims around the globe as revealed in the world’s first major opinion poll, conducted by Gallup, the preeminent polling organization. Following its release, the film was broadcast on select PBS stations during 2008 and 2009. Gallup researchers began by asking the questions on every American’s mind. Why is there so much anti-Americanism in the Muslim world? Who are the extremists and how do Muslims feel about them? What do Muslims like and dislike about the West? What do Muslim women really want? Crucial policy decisions hang on these questions. They continue to generate passionate disagreements in the public square. Yet for all the heat and controversy, the actual views of the world’s Muslims have been conspicuously missing from this debate until now. This film is not rated. No registration necessary.

The first film, Muhammad: Legacy of a Prophet, travels in the footsteps of the founder of Islam to the Arabian Desert and the holy city of Mecca where Muhammad's story unfolded. But the film does not just stay in the past. Much of its story is told through the observations of contemporary American Muslims, including a fireman at the World Trade Center on September 11th, a second generation Arab-American family building a community based on Islamic principles, a Congressional Chief of Staff working for justice, and a refugee fleeing religious persecution, whose experiences in some way echo Muhammad's life. Fredricksen Library has teamed up with Penn State Master Gardeners to bring you a series of workshops that will show you how to garden with nature. Presentations will be held the 3rd Tuesday of every month, February – October. This month, join Joseph Minahan from the American Rhododendron Society as he shares a presentation featuring numerous rhododendron varieties and discuss growing tips, propagation methods, and breeding plants. Joseph bred the first Eastern yellow hardy rhododendron!

In April’s presentation, members of the Penn Cumberland Garden Club and the Tuscarora Daffodil Group will share their love of daffodils by discussing the various categories, their characteristics and bloom times, as well as tips on planning and caring for them.

February's presentation features Catherine Scott, a Penn State Master Gardener and an employee at a local nursery. She truly enjoys answering peoples questions about gardening and will share with you the most frequently asked questions she encounters.

Come and meet Team Technicon, a robotics team in the organization First comprised of students from the Cumberland Valley School District. They will be in the library to conduct STEM related activities and get children/teens excited about robotics. Drop by and see what it's all about! No registration necessary. The Friends of Fredricksen Library will hold a special children's book sale in partnership with the Midtown Scholar Bookstore. A selection of award winning, best selling and popular children's and youth books chosen by Midtown Scholar will be available for purchase. Categories for sale include: Toddler books; Beginning Readers/Picture books; Chapter books; Young Adult books, and Teen books priced from $2 - $10.  

The sale will raise funds for the Friends to benefit the library and provide opportunities for children to buy high quality books as holiday gifts for their family and friends (and adults to do the same) at a fraction of list prices. The sale is open to the public.
