2 pm in the Community Room, Lower Level Directed, co-written, and co-produced by Bertrand Tavernier, this celebrated French film explores family dynamics in a clan on the eve of World War I. It was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 42nd Golden Globe Awards and the 38th British Academy Film Awards. France. Not Rated. 94 minutes.

You'll watch two Kanopy selections at home, voted on by the group, and then spend an hour discussing each selection at the library. The Whangara people believe their ancestor Paikea was saved from drowning by riding home on the back of a whale. The tribal group has since granted leadership positions to the first-born males, believing them to be descendants of Paikea. But then a young mother dies in childbirth along with her newborn male son. His twin sister survives and the little girl, Pai, is brought up by her grandparents.
