5-part series in February and March 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm in the Ruggaber Community Room, Lower Level In this day and age of information (& misinformation) overload, we bring you directly to the source to learn more about your Muslim neighbors and their beliefs. During this series, you will view a film about one aspect of Islam and will then have the opportunity to ask questions to a panel. This 80 min documentary is about Jews and Muslims struggling for social justice and against the hijacking of their religions by extremists. Inspired by two medieval ‘wise men of Cordoba’ — one Muslim, the other a Jew — these contemporary people of faith are promoting the values of democracy and tolerance on the frontlines of the violent clashes that are defining our century. The documentary follows the film’s director as he undertakes a journey around the Mediterranean world after the attacks of 9/11, visiting people who are utilizing their religious traditions to counter the propositions that there is an inevitable ‘clash of civilizations’ between the West and the Muslim world, an incompatibility between Islam and democracy, and an unsolvable conflict between Muslims and Jews. The producer, Jacob Bender, will be on hand for Q & A following the film. This film is not rated. No registration necessary.

The Friends of Fredricksen Library will host author Stephen Fried, as he discusses his new book Rush about Benjamin Rush, Revolution, Madness & Visionary Doctor who became a Founding Father. This event is free and open to the public. The annual Meeting of the Friends of Fredricksen Library immediately follows Stephen Fried’s presentation. Pay your 2020 dues and adopt the 2020 Budget which designates funds for library programs and projects, and elect officers.

Join us as we welcome Bright Star Touring Theatre this Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Their powerful production will introduce audiences to poignant events and notable names of the Civil Rights Movement. This acclaimed show focuses on the tumultuous years between 1955 and 1968 and shines light on important milestones in our history, including: the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the SCLC, Brown v. Board of Education, the Sit-In Movement, the Freedom Riders, the March on Washington, and the assassination of Dr Martin Luther King, Jr. Viewers can expect to meet important figures and hear inspiring songs of the era. FROM FRANCE: Agnès Varda and JR have things in common: a passion for and the exploration of images in general, and more precisely, for places and for ways of showing, sharing, and exhibiting them. Agnès chose cinema. JR chose to create open air photography galleries. When Agnès and JR met in 2015, they immediately wanted to work together, to shoot a film in France, far from cities, during a trip in JR's photographic (and magical) truck. Through chance encounters and prepared projects, they reached out to others, listening to them, photographing them, and sometimes putting them on posters. This film also tells the story of Agnès and JR's friendship, which grew stronger throughout the film shoot, between surprises and teasing, and while laughing about their differences. Rated PG.
