Ronald Reagan's Strategic Defense Initiative, commonly known as "Star Wars" has been misrepresented in U.S. history textbooks. Six months after Reagan left office, the Department of Defense quietly launched a particle accelerator to test how a neutral particle beam would function in space. The tests were a success and the US inaugurated its use of particle beams in space— creating a real-life prototype of future "death rays" and "ray guns" once found only in Hollywood B-movies and in classified reports on unidentified flying objects. Are you a gardener, artist, spiritual person, nature lover or crafter?  Does being in the presence of beauty relax and rejuvenate you?  Ikebana, the ancient Japanese art of flower arranging, might be perfect for you. Join accomplished artists from the Harrisburg Chapter of Ikebana International as they demonstrate floral arranging and introduce you to Ikebana’s 600-year history and its tradition of harmony, respect for nature and tranquility. Refreshments following the program.

Join us for a celebration of Bruce (who turns 76 on 9/23) and his contributions to music culture. Bruce and the E Street Band have been performing for over fifty years. His live concerts are legendary for the collective joy and uplift experienced by audiences. Bruce has written over 500 songs and many have become classics. Some of those classics we will sing and discuss, including: Darkness on the Edge of Town, The Promised Land, Dancing in the Dark, Born in the USA, The River, Thunder Road, Youngstown, The Rising, Born to Run, Atlantic City, Land of Hope and Dreams, Badlands, and more. West Chester University professor, guitarist and singer, Doug Morris, will play and sing Bruce songs, and share stories and images from Bruce's history.  All are invited (singing along is encouraged).

From the Jazz Age to the present day, the United States has experienced a rich legacy of musical duos like Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, Johnny Cash and June Carter, and Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow. The Villones will survey the decades from the 1920’s to the 2020’s, performing a sampling of the many wonderful songs that make up our cultural heritage. Join Dean and Vicki, a husband and wife duo making music together for more than 20 years, as they pay tribute to a hundred years of vocal duets and the stories behind them.

The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas is an epic tale of wrongful imprisonment, adventure and revenge.  The novel was inspired by a real-life case and was a popular success when it was first serialized in the 1840s. Each week, we will read approximately 100 pages to complete the 1244 pages penned by the author by the last discussion on November 24.

September: The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas by Gertrude Stein 

Published in 1933 and narrated by Alice, this autobiography begins with her initial move to France in 1907, the day after which she meets Gertrude, sparking a relationship that lasts for nearly four decades. Recounting the vibrant and literary life the two make for themselves among the Parisian avant-garde, Alice opens the doors to the prominent salons they held in their home at rue de Fleurus, hosting fellow expatriate American writers such as Ernest Hemingway, T. S. Eliot, and Ezra Pound as well as artists Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, and Man Ray, and speaks of the twilight of the Paris belle epoque.
