Fredricksen Library is excited to offer a new series of paid classes to learn to speak Mandarin. Designed for learners who have had little or no previous exposure to Mandarin, the fun and relaxed environment will focus mostly on speaking, but you will also learn to recognize and write some basic characters. The course is divided into sessions of 10 classes. The instructor, Alicia Sigmon has a B.A. in Linguistics, with a minor in Chinese from the University of Pittsburgh. She lived in Fuzhou, Fujian in China where she taught English as a foreign language for 3 years. Now she lives in Mechanicsburg and wants to share her passion for language with you! If you have always wanted to learn the Italian language and to share this passion with people who live in this area, this is a great time to do it in the comfort and safety of your home and in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. Italian for Beginners classes have successfully been offered in person at Fredricksen for more than 2 years by instructor Anna Maria Bertini Jones. The current situation has opened up the opportunity to explore online instruction options to make the learning experience even more effective and enjoyable. You will still be learning the basics of the Italian language through interactive online classes and group work, but it will also be possible to use a variety of online multimedia resources to develop basic conversation skills and get in touch with cultural topics like cuisine, art, movies, lifestyle, etc.

Classes are very easy to access. You will receive a Zoom link invitation; click on the link and you will be automatically directed to your classroom. During class time students will be learning and collaborating with the instructor’s help and direction. No specific technological skills are required. All you need is a computer/ laptop/tablet and a printer. Ages 16 and older. Cost: $100 for 10 classes. Students will be advised to also purchase a book online. Registration begins September 15 online, by phone, or in person at the library.
