A Celtic Concert with Seasons!

Join us as we welcome St. Patrick's Day with the musical styling of Seasons.  The Lee siblings have toured in multiple states and countries and have opened for artists as varied as Grammy-award-winner Ashley Cleveland, Scythian, and Celtic Fiddle Festival. Seasons has performed on both regional and national television, and been featured at many national Celtic festivals. Now they will whisk you away to the Emerald Isle and leave you humming a merry tune over St. Paddy's Day weekend! No registration necessary. Sponsored by the McCormick Family Foundation. 

Join us for an event unlike anything we’ve ever held. Beloved local, Berthi van der Bent H., grew up in the Netherlands during World War II. Over the course of weeks she was interviewed spontaneously by the French Language Group in Fredricksen Library about her experiences and memories as a young girl (age 8-13) of that time.  At the beginning of the war, the Netherlands declared themselves neutral before the invasion. As a young child, Berthi grew up constantly hearing the planes from both sides fly (and sometimes get shot down) overhead, as the Netherlands were in between the fighting.  Berthi and her family kept her brothers in hiding, since they were German-born and were supposed to go work for Hitler.  There was constant fear of losing them. She shares her memories of the Hunger Winter, when they had almost no food to eat.  Her perspective on life in the Netherlands during World War II is a unique one that highlights lessons and stories that we all need to hear. You don’t want to miss this unique and powerful memoir from this local survivor of WWII and treasured resident of Camp Hill. *ALL SESSIONS ARE FULL BUT YOU MAY REGISTER FOR THE WAITING LIST

Part One: Sunday, March 20, 2:30 – 3:45 pm In the Community Room, lower level: The first part of Berthi’s video interviews will be shown, including a live introduction from Dr. David Witwer from Penn State Harrisburg. He will lead us through some background and context so we may better understand Berthi’s experience. The video will also be available for viewing online, without the introduction by Professor Witwer. Join us as we discuss The Woodlanders, a classic novel that compliments this year’s Longwood Gardens Community Read theme of trees. This rivalry between a woodlander and an outsider takes place in the enthralling forest around Little Hintock. Ages 18 and older, please. You must have read or listened to the book to attend. Join us as we discuss Things Fall Apart, Achebe’s novel about life before and after colonialism came to Nigeria. Okonkwo rules his family with a heavy hand, but he is ruled by fear. Can they rise above these challenges to find redemption as their culture changes? You must have read or listened to the book to attend. Ages 18 and older, please. Registration begins February 1.

Donating blood may be one of the most important things you’ve ever done. Just one pint of your blood can save as many as four lives. Come and donate in Fredricksen's lower parking lot (Walnut Street). The Central PA Blood Bank is usually here on the first Friday of every month, but this month will be the second Friday - March11. It is a safe and easy process which takes approximately 45 minutes. Generally, anyone age 16 or older, weighing at least 110 pounds and in good health, can donate blood. We strongly suggest you schedule an appointment to donate blood. Appointments help us improve your donation experience. A form of ID is required to donate. • Walk-Ins are welcome; however, donors with appointments will be taken first and this may result in a significant wait time.

Join us for Moving Forward, a book discussion series geared towards those who have suffered a loss or tragedy and could use an infusion of hope. In cooperation with Hospice of Central PA, we will be reading books focusing on the redemptive power of the human spirit. Join us this month for Michelle Obama's Becoming, a deeply personal reckoning of a woman of soul and substance who has steadily defied expectations—and whose story inspires us to do the same. Ages 18 and older, please. You must have read or listened to the book to attend. Registration begins February 1.
