Joining us from Hendrix College, Dr. Deborah Skok (PhD University of Chicago) will illuminate the life of Jane M. Hoey, one of the most powerful women in the federal government in her talk, "Jane Hoey and Mother’s Aid during the Great Depression."

A pioneer in professionalizing the field of social work, Ms. Hoey was brought into FDR's administration with the founding of Social Security (SSA),holding for nearly 20 years the position of Director of the Bureau of Public Assistance, which included Old Age Assistance, Aid to Dependent Children, and Aid to the Blind. A fiery advocate on behalf of these programs, Hoey was a devout Catholic her entire life and Catholic social teaching informed her own commitment to social justice.
Program starts at 7 pm but do join us at 6:30 pm for cookies and socializing.
