Join art historian, Sarah Kate Gillespie as she discusses visual culture of the Civil War era, based on a course she teaches at Gettysburg College. Gillespie will discuss photography, painting and sculpture of the Civil War era. Sarah Kate teaches courses in Civil War Era Studies, Public History, and Art History. She was previously Curator of American Art at The Georgia Museum of Art, University of Georgia, where she also taught in the department of Art History. Prior to that Sarah Kate was assistant professor of Art History at York College, CUNY, and Curator of Fine Art and the Brooklyn Historical Society. Join us for our first-ever film discussion series! Much like a book group, you will watch the film on your own and then join us on Zoom for a moderated discussion. All films will be available on the free film platform, Kanopy.com. All you need to access the film is your library card! Our first film, Lost in Paris, tells the story of a small-town Canadian librarian and a strangely seductive, oddly egotistical vagabond. This film is not rated. You must have watched the film to participate in the discussion. Registration for discussion begins December 15.

Professional actress Michèle LaRue entertains with a trio of holiday stories about love, fun, and giving: The Christmas Sing in Our Village, by Mary E. Wilkins Freeman (1898), Their Dear Little Ghost, by Elia W. Peattie (1898), The Gift of the Magi, O. Henry’s well-loved favorite (1906) . . . and a surprise from Louisa May Alcott.

The Christmas Sing in Our Village is a lighthearted, gossipy tale of small-town New England anticipation, celebration, and romantic intrigue. Their Dear Little Ghost is the tender story of a child who enchanted in life and returns to bring comfort at Christmastime. In The Gift of the Magi, struggling young newlyweds search doggedly for two perfect Christmas presents . . . surprising each other and themselves, and discovering the true spirit of giving.

Get into the holiday spirit with a relaxing evening of carols and holiday music. This year, we welcome back Louis Lynch (harpist) and the First UMC Handbell Choir, who will delight your senses and transport you from the hustle and bustle of the holiday season with a variety of music to soothe and rest your soul. Sit and enjoy the concert or browse the stacks and take in the tranquil atmosphere.
COVID Update: Due to the continuing high transmission rates of the COVID 19 virus, the library will be utilizing social distancing, which will create limited capacity. The main doors will be closed when we are full. Masks are required for indoor library programs and events. We ask for your patience, as we will be using the concert as a pilot project to live stream on our Facebook page. No registration necessary.
