Barbara Landis, a public historian and Carlisle Indian Industrial School biographer, will present a program about Indian Schools  at the New Cumberland Public Library Foundation House. She will share some of the highlights of her experiences traveling with a team from Dickinson College to Native American communities over the past five years. 

Ms. Landis has also worked with individuals and nations to develop the www.carlisleindianschool.org biographical and research web pages. She urges those who study the Carlisle Indian Industrial School to recognize the complex response from descendants of school students. As a consequence of her work, Landis makes it a point to respectfully honor those students and their descendants who lived the experiment, to celebrate with those who prospered from it, and to grieve with those whose lives were diminished by it. This program is sponsored by AAUW Harrisburg Branch and AAUW Carlisle Branch and masks are required for all attendees, regardless of vaccination status.

Join the Friends of New Cumberland Public Library for their monthly book review program. In October, Nan Cavenaugh will review the 2022 One Book, One Community read, The Life We Bury by Allen Eskens. Reviews, which are presented by the Friends of the New Cumberland Public Library, are held on the second Tuesday of the month from September through November and March through May. Reviews are free and open to the general public. No need to have read the book to attend the review.

This fall STEM challenge will not only get kids outside and engaged with nature, it will also encourage them to use their creativity and problem solving skills to create a leaf sculpture greater than 6 inches tall. This seasonal craft allows children to strengthen their concentration skills and fine motor muscles to construct a simple yet eye-catching creation. Available at the Children's Desk starting Saturday, September 11. No registration required but supplies are limited.

While your tweens may be busy reading school curriculum books, we hope they can kick back with some fun and world-expanding graphic novels featuring diverse characters! Participants will receive a copy of the book which must be returned, and will have a chance to discuss the book with peers. In honor of back-to-school season, this month's pick is New Kid by Jerry Craft. Registration required.

Children interested in reading practice can sign up to read to a therapy animal! Caring Hearts Pet Therapy program seeks to improve a child’s reading and communication skills with the assistance of trained therapy animal teams.

Children are encouraged to read, engage, and connect with the pet. Bring your favorite book or two to share with one of our animal friends. Registration for a 20-minute reading slot is required and space is limited. To keep everyone safe, including our dogs and volunteers, we are asking that participants please mask.

Join authors Joe Ferrell and Joe Farley at the September Friends of New Cumberland Public Library Book Review as they discuss their research on the gravesites of notable luminaries in Pennsylvania cemeteries. Masks are strongly recommended for all participants regardless of vaccination status at this indoor program.

Book reviews are held on the second Tuesday of the month from September through May in Foundation Hall. Book reviews are free and open to the public and no registration is required to attend.

Foundation Hall is located at the corner of Ninth and Sharon Streets across the parking lot from the Library building.

Young readers will be introduced to the first book in a popular series to get them interested in reading more. Participants will receive a copy of the book which must be returned after the program.
