Our STEM programs will help you explore your curiosity and learn about science! We will extract DNA from different fruits through the use of household items while also learning about DNA and the human genome. Children will also learn about the scientists who discovered DNA. This program is for ages 9-12. Registration and masking required. Space is limited.

Do you have a DSLR or mirrorless camera and aren't sure how to use it? Are you still taking photos using only the AUTOMATIC mode? If you answered yes, then this is the perfect class for you! Each class, taught by instructor & photographer, Michael Yatsko, will begin with an exploration of a new topic followed by some hands on application of the technique or idea. Weekly assignments will also be given to reinforce what has been learned in class. During this class you will learn about the history of photography and cameras, the science behind how a DSLR camera works, the exposure triangle - aperture, shutter speed and ISO, many different composition techniques, lenses, and much, much more. In order to participate you need to have a DSLR or mirrorless camera. $150 fee covers all six classes. Ages 13+; Seating is very limited. THIS CLASS IS FULL.

Tuesdays, January 12 - March 16

If you have always wanted to learn the Italian language and to share this passion with people who live in this area, this is a great time to do it in the comfort and safety of your home and in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. Italian for Beginners classes have successfully been offered in person at Fredricksen for more than 2 years by instructor Anna Maria Bertini Jones. The current situation has opened up the opportunity to explore online instruction options to make the learning experience even more effective and enjoyable. You will still be learning the basics of the Italian language through interactive online classes and group work, but it will also be possible to use a variety of online multimedia resources to develop basic conversation skills and get in touch with cultural topics like cuisine, art, movies, lifestyle, etc.

Classes are very easy to access. You will receive a Zoom link invitation; click on the link and you will be automatically directed to your classroom. During class time students will be learning and collaborating with the instructor’s help and direction. No specific technological skills are required. All you need is a computer/ laptop/tablet and a printer. Ages 16 and older. Cost: $100 for 10 classes. Students will be advised to also purchase a book online. Register by phone or in person at the library.

Do you want to enjoy some close up magic, but you’re just too cozy to leave home? We have great news for you! Master magician DAN KAMIN responded to the Covid crisis by creating a mind-bending performance of eye-popping online magic called SHAZOOM!  It’s up close and personal, and it beams from Dan’s Magic Parlor directly to your home.  The virtual party runs approximately an hour.  Because there is a lot of audience interaction during the program participants are asked to make themselves visible on Zoom. We suggest that you read this article, The Escape Artist, Dan’s highly entertaining account of how the legendary Harry Houdini got him started in magic.  Dan Kamin trained Robert Downey, Jr. for his Oscar-nominated performance in Chaplin and created Johnny Depp’s physical comedy moves for Benny and Joon.  He also played the vengeful wooden Indian that came to life in George Romero’s cult horror classic Creepshow 2.  He performs in theatres and with symphony orchestras worldwide.  Registration is needed for Zoom link and begins November 15. No age limits are required, but the show is best suited for ages 8 and up.

All Cumberland County Libraries, including Fredricksen, will be closed on Wednesday, October 27 for Staff Development Day. No items will be due, no fines will accrue and no holds will expire. We'll reopen on Thursday, October 28 at 9 am.
